Chris Sutton feels his old club Chelsea need to go on a fresh £500m spending spree after they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday.

Goals from Diogo Jota and Conor Bradley put Jurgen Klopp’s side in firm control before Dominik Szoboszlai made it 3-0 after the break in the top-flight clash.

Christopher Nkunku scored at the other end but Luis Diaz sealed all three points by registering Liverpool’s fourth goal as it ended in a comfortable victory.

Sutton, watching the match for BBC Radio 5 Live, has argued that the Blues need fresh investment despite spending over £1 billion on players since co-owner Todd Boehly took over from Roman Abramovich in May 2022.

Chelsea were the biggest spenders in the summer and splashed out £434.5m – the most spent by any club during a transfer window in Premier League history.

‘Liverpool have been red hot and played with such intensity, looking at Chelsea you would probably think they would have to spend half a billion pounds on the team,’ Sutton said.

‘In fairness it is easy to criticise Chelsea, but Liverpool’s press has been so good – the longer the [match] has gone on Chelsea have lacked belief. That is one of the best Liverpool performances I have seen this season.’

Meanwhile, Sutton was left disappointed with Cole Palmer’s performance after he was unable to register a goal or assist.

‘Cole Palmer has been very quiet this evening,’ Sutton added. ‘He has not been able to influence the game how he would have liked.’

Chelsea are back in action on Sunday as the host Wolves at Stamford Bridge, looking to return to winning ways.
