Chris Sutton has named a £50m striker who’d be a ‘good fit’ for Manchester United and has urged the club to sign him in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have already brought in Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna but Erik ten Hag’s side are keen to recruit another forward before the deadline on August 30.

United have been linked to a number of top-flight stars, including Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Brighton’s Evan Ferguson and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

There is one Premier League player who stands out to Sutton the most – Toney – with the football pundit and former player urging United to now get a deal done amid competition from sides in the Saudi Pro League.

It is thought that the Bees are demanding at least £50m for the England international – but United want a ‘PSR-friendly deal’ which would initially see them take Toney on loan – similar to what Arsenal did with Brentford’s David Raya.

‘Manchester United are strikerless at this moment in time, he (Ivan Toney) would be a good fit there,’ Sutton told the BBC’s Monday Night Club.

‘He has proven himself in the Premier League and he has all the attributes. His link up, his physicality, set-piece [ability] and his all-round play have developed really well. At this stage of his career, I think Saudi is a no-no.

‘You can have all the money in the world but this is Ivan Toney at his peak and I would like to see him stay in the Premier League… I would [only] go to Saudi Arabia when I was 35 and past it.

‘That doesn’t mean he can’t go to Saudi and then come back to the Premier League, but why doesn’t he just wait another season and then get a move?

‘He’s 28, his career was flourishing then he had the ban, but then he had the high of the Euros this summer.

‘He is in a really good place at the moment. From Brentford’s point of view, at £50m, you can understand why they would sell him for that amount with a year left on his contract.’

It is thought that United may bide their time and wait until deadline day to launch a bid for Toney.

The Premier League summer transfer window closes on Friday, August 30 2024 at 11pm UK time.
