The news comes only a month after Madonna‘s stepmother, Joan Ciccone, died after a battle with cancer as well.

Christopher was a pivotal part of Madonna‘s early career, and famously worked as one of her backup dancers, appearing in club performances and music videos like “Lucky Star” before becoming a show designer and backstage dresser. He also was the art director of her iconic Blonde Ambition World Tour.

He wrote in his autobiography Life with My Sister Madonna that she called him and said,: “I’m going on tour, and of course I want you to dress me, but you think you ought to design the stage and art-direct the show as well.”

He was then appointed tour director for her follow-up, The Girlie Show.

In addition, he directed music videos for legends like Tony Bennett and Dolly Parton.

Later on, he became an interior designer and even launched a footwear line. While he and his sister publicly feuded at a certain point, leading to his book Life With My Sister Madonna, they eventually mended the relationship.

Our thoughts are with Christopher Ciccone‘s loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.
