One of the UK’s leading cinema chains, Cineworld, has announced the closure of six venures across the country, as part of a major restructuring plan.

The company says this move is to ensure the long-term future of the UK business, and is beginning a consultation process with employees at the affected sites.

If the Restructuring Plan (RP) is approved by the court, Cineworld expects the changes to occur in late September 2024. The total number of impacted sites cannot be confirmed until the process is complete. Cineworld currently run more than 100 cinemas across the UK.

A Cineworld spokesperson said: “We are implementing a Restructuring Plan that will provide our company with a strong platform to return our business to profitability, attract further investment from the Group, and ensure a sustainable long-term future for Cineworld in the UK.”

The plan will not affect the Cineworld business outside of the UK.

On Thursday, Sky News in the UK first reported the plans, saying that, although the precise number of job losses was unclear, one source said it would be “at least in the hundreds.”

As noted in the Sky News report, “Cineworld grew under the leadership of the Greidinger family into a global giant of the industry, acquiring chains including Regal in the US in 2018.”

Thursday Deadline requested response from Cineworld, who gave us no comment, whereupon concerned Cineworld employees voiced their concerns on social media, including one who wrote:

We're all really stressed today over the possibility of losing our jobs, so please – if you do go to a Cineworld today – give the workers as much love and support as you can https://t.co/spQUNrcdB4
