In a bold move to tackle the escalating drug pandemic among Nigerian youth, a social club—Lagoon Palms Aviary— has unveiled the commencement of a project. The club is set to build a rehab centre for drug addicts. The unveiling ceremony was held at the club’s end of the year party in Sunday, December 22, 2024, at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event was a vibrant celebration, featuring entertainment hosted by the charismatic MC, Gbenga Adeyinka. Attendees were also engaged in enlightening sessions that highlighted the detrimental effects of drug abuse and excessive alcohol consumption among young people.

During his address, the President of the Club, Adegoko Oshadipe, emphasised the club’s commitment to community service and social justice.

He further urged the government to create job opportunities and provide incentives for the youth stating, “The government can start by creating jobs for the youth and giving incentives. On our part, we have taken it upon ourselves to go to the streets and talk to our brothers who are engaging in using substances that are not good for them. We have different medical personnel and NGOs that we have partnered with to rehabilitate these kinds of people.”

Reflecting on the past year, Oshadipe expressed gratitude towards club members. “Looking back at the past 12 months, it has been a truly rewarding year for us as a society. I would like to thank the executive council and members of the club for their support and trust in my leadership.”

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin who was also present at the event stated that the Lagos State police command was very happy to be part of the initiative as statistics had shown that most crimes were fuelled by the use of illicit substances.

The event also included exciting activities such as gift-giving and an energetic after-party where attendees danced the night away.
