Bret Hart thought that CM Punk vs Randy Orton was the best match at WrestleMania 27.
The two men faced off at the event, with Orton picking up the win after catching a flying Punk with his famous RKO. Speaking in a WWE YouTube Video, the pair discussed Bret Hart’s reaction to their match at WrestleMania 27. In the video, CM Punk said:
“I remember Bret [Hart] texting me right after this, after the show, saying he loved our stuff. To his point of view, ‘you guys had the best match on the show’.
Orton replied, saying “See that’s… I tell people this a lot. The fans, getting them to react, of course, is one of the reasons we love doing this. That feeling you have out there. But then to come back through the curtain and to have your peers… Usually, you know who’s blowing smoke up your ass and who’s not! Bret reaching out – that’s gotta just make you feel great.”
Punk spoke up, saying, “Bret ain’t ever gonna sugar coat anything,” to which Orton replied, “No, none of those guys. I remember me and John [Cena] had a match and Taker texted me. He had never texted me before, so he had to go through the process of getting my number, reaching out and taking the time out of his day to tell me, ‘Hey man, hell of a match. You guys stole the show’. And that just…badge of honor.”
CM Punk Asked Before Using Bret Hart’s Move In The Match
CM Punk used a move made famous by Bret Hart in his match against Randy Orton.
Late in the bout, he locked in a figure four leg lock, while he had Orton’s legs wrapped around the ring post. This was used by Bret multiple times in his career, and was a clear homage by Punk to the WWE Hall of Famer.
While watching a clip of himself locking in a ring post figure four on Orton, CM Punk said:
“This is probably why Bret loved the match. [I] stole his stuff! There’s no way I did this without asking him permission, so yeah. So he knew about it.”
