CM Punk’s debut in AEW was met with great excitement, marking a hopeful new chapter in his career. However, his time with the company ended poorly, and now Punk has been defended against accusations of being a cancer to pro wrestling.

CM Punk’s arrival in AEW in 2021 was landmark event, quickly establishing him as a key player in the promotion. He achieved the height of his AEW career by winning the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing 2022. Unfortunately, his reign was plagued by injuries, including a torn triceps that occurred during the infamous Brawl Out incident at AEW All Out 2022.

Despite these setbacks, Punk made came back June 2023 as a major figure on AEW Collision. However, his AEW tenure ended abruptly after heated altercation with Jack Perry led to the termination of his contract. After leaving AEW, Punk made an unexpected return to WWE at Survivor Series later that year. In fact, Chris Jericho allegedly called CM Punk ‘cancer’ to the AEW locker room.

While speaking on the Busted Open Radio podcast, Bully Ray stated that he does not view CM Punk as a cancer to professional wrestling. He acknowledged that the term “cancer” is very harsh and emphasized that his opinion is based on his personal interactions with Punk.

Bully Ray described Punk as someone who is deeply passionate about the wrestling business, direct, and intense. He noted that Punk knows his own worth and expects others to contribute equally.

“There is a lot to dissect there. The word that jumps out at me is cancer. Cuz, that is a very very harsh word. Is CM Punk a cancer in wrestling, in wrestling locker rooms? I can only go of what I know of the guy. So, with Punk, I go by my own interaction with him. I go by his demeanor. His tone, his inflection, how I see him act with other people. And then I also compare that person to myself and my perception out there.

Do I think CM Punk is a cancer in a pro wrestling locker room? Absolutely not. CM Punk is a guy who is passionate about the professional wrestling business. He’s passionate about what he does. He is direct, he is intense, he knows what he brings to the table. And he expects you to bring something to the table too.”

CM Punk has been receiving rave reviews from fans and WWE Superstars alike when it comes to his overall behavior since returning to the company last year, so it’s likely many fans will agree with Bully Ray about the fact that Punk is not a cancer to professional wrestling.
