CM Punk departed from WWE under controversial circumstances in 2014. Now, in 2024, he is set to have his first match back in the ring at SummerSlam. The lapse in time was not lost on Punk at all.
Speaking to Denise Salcedo at San Diego Comic-Con, WWE Superstar CM Punk discussed his upcoming in-ring return at WWE SummerSlam, where he will face Drew McIntyre. Punk shared his thoughts on his return, and how he is feeling about everything.
“Mentally, strong. Physically, 100%, or at least as 100% as I get at my current stage of my career. I feel good. I’m anxious, and I’m ready to lace up my boots.”
CM Punk also reflected on this being his first televised singles match in WWE in over a decade. He will lock up with Drew McIntyre on August 3 at SummerSlam. To him, it’s crazy that it’s been a decade, but it will also be a very special match.
“As far as televised, meat-on-the-bone kind of matches, it’s crazy that it’s been 10 years. It’s wild, but I think that’s what makes it exciting. I think that’s what makes it a special moment. I think that’s why a lot of people are going to tune in to watch SummerSlam.”
Seth Rollins will serve as the special guest referee in McIntyre and Punk’s SummerSlam throw-down. He also announced that there is only one rule in the match. The event will take place at Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, and will be broadcast live on Peacock. Cleveland fans will also see one of their own host the show, as The Miz was announced to have those duties during the July 29 episode of WWE RAW.
CM Punk did have a couple singles matches against Dominik Mysterio prior to the 2024 Royal Rumble match, but those matches were not seen on television. They went down during WWE live events, but SummerSlam will certainly be a different setting for Punk.
