CM Punk looks back on the WrestleMania 40 main event.
In the night two main event of WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes defeated Roman Reigns in a chaotic Bloodline Rules match for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Afterward, a number of colleagues, including CM Punk, Randy Orton, and Kevin Owens, celebrated with Rhodes in the ring. During a recent interview with SI Media With Jimmy Traina, Punk was asked about his experience watching the main event beforehand.
While Punk intently kept himself in the dark on the match’s finish, he did piece some bits together after seeing the likes of The Undertaker, John Cena, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson backstage. Additionally, Punk noted that Rhodes previously asked him to join the in-ring celebration in the event that Rhodes emerged victorious.
“Cody approached me before the match, and he said ‘Hey, if this thing goes my way, I’d like you to come out afterwards and be part of the celebration. I was like ‘Oh okay.’ So I got to sit in the Gorilla and watch everything unfold and it was super exciting because you get to see Cena roll through. It’s fascinating for me as a performer to watch people and what they do before they go out,” Punk said.”It’s like when you go to a ballpark and you watch somebody walk out of the dugout and get in the batter’s box. What are they doing to warm up? Are they using the donut? Are they doing a full swing? What are they doing, you know?
“Rock’s back there trying to amp himself up. Cena’s trying to warm himself up,” Punk continued. “It’s fascinating to watch all that and then watch them go out and do that. That’s always a fun experience and you learn that way. You learn the way things work backstage.”
Earlier that evening, Punk served as the special guest commentor for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match between Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre.
