Plans change, and Cody Rhodes says fans would would have been even more angry if they knew the original plan for him at WWE WrestleMania 40.

The road to WWE WrestleMania 40 was full of twists and turns. Cody Rhodes won the WWE Royal Rumble, setting the stage for a rematch with Roman Reigns. But Rhodes briefly stepped aside as WWE instead started building a match between Reigns and The Rock. However, fan backlash led WWE to pivot back to Rhodes, and Cody went on to dethrone Reigns.

Speaking with Kenny McIntosh for Issue 48 of Inside The Ropes Magazine, Cody Rhodes looked back on WWE WrestleMania 40. He did not explicitly say what the real plan had been, but he said that fans would have been even more angry with it. (H/t Alex Hunt of Inside The Ropes)

“If people knew the real plan for me, they’d be even more angry. I can’t share the real plan for you, The Rock plan, whatever it may be. That was going to be on my mind in terms of how do we make that work? How do we accomplish that? I had a really good team of people around me. That’s where DDP hit me with the famous, whatever happens to you will be the best thing that ever happens to you line, and I thought, that’s insane, that’s madness. I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about, and he was right.”

Cody Rhodes On Watching The Fans’ Response

Rhodes went on to recall how he watched the fans rally around him, and he realized that he may have had a reason to be confident. He also joked that it was a Wheatley Vodka-sponsored few days.

“Including if it had gone the other way, he would have been right because the audience was what mattered, and I got to be really quiet, and I got to say nothing, I got to watch the fire grow, and I realized maybe I had every right to be confident. Maybe I had every right to not be concerned. But yeah, definitely, let’s say it was a Wheatley Vodka-sponsored few days.”
