Cody Rhodes wishes he could speak to Dusty Rhodes today.
The American Nightmare achieved a lifelong dream on WrestleMania 40 Sunday. He finished a two-year-long storyline in the WWE by defeated Roman Reigns in the main event of the show.
He overcame the Bloodline, with help from Jey Uso, Seth Rollins, John Cena and The Undertaker in a star-studded match.
This marked Cody’s first WWE Championship, and second World Title after winning the NWA World’s Heavyweight Championship at All In in 2018.
An emotional Cody Rhodes spoke to the press in his post-WrestleMania press conference. He was asked what he would say to his father, “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, if he were alive. Cody paused for a moment.
Dusty passed away in 2015, and his memory has been a big part of Cody’s journey in WWE.
“That’s a great question. If I’m being honest, I think I’d want to say to him that ‘I hope I lived up to your name. And thank you for that name.’ And then I would say, ‘Sorry about the tattoo.’”
“The tattoo” in question was the “American Nightmare” logo he had tattooed on his neck, prior to AEW Revolution 2020.
Triple H And WWE Gave Cody Rhodes His Father’s Watch
Cody Rhodes continued speaking about the event. He revealed that Triple H, Bruce Pritchard and Nick Khan bought him a watch, similar to one his father once pawned to pay for school, as a gift for his WrestleMania 40 achievement.
“I know this isn’t you asked, but something I wanted to share. I came to the back and Bruce Prichard and Triple H, and Nick Khan handed me this [watch], which is the same watch that my dad had, that he pawned so I could go to acting school. So the level of investment and responsibility that the company put in my hands? I hope that I can pay it back and pay it forward 100 times over.”
