Conor Gallagher is attracting strong interest from several Premier League clubs including Tottenham, but the midfielder is keen to stay put and fight for his Chelsea future.
The Blues are under pressure to lower their wage bill over upcoming transfer windows, in order to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules, and the likes of Levi Colwill, Armando Broja, Trevoh Chalobah and Gallagher are all being linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge.
Offloading academy products for big money has been identified as a way Chelsea can generate ‘pure profit’ and Gallagher – who is currently on wages of £70,000-a-week – could be sold for this reason, despite his strong performances this season.
Spurs have been keeping close tabs on Gallagher’s situation and are ready to swoop should Chelsea give their bitter London rivals the green light ahead of the summer transfer window.
However, The Daily Mail report that Gallagher is ‘determined’ to stay at Chelsea beyond the end of the campaign and this remains his ‘priority’.
Gallagher has nailed down his place in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI in recent months and has been one of the club’s few shining lights alongside summer arrival Cole Palmer across an otherwise disappointing season.
The 24-year-old – who joined Chelsea’s academy at the age just eight – has racked up four goals in his last five appearances for the west London giants and has worn the captain’s armband in Reece James’ absence this term.
The report indicates that there has been ‘no significant progress’ over an extension for Gallagher, with the midfielder’s current contract due to expire in 2025.
Chelsea are likely to demand a fee in excess of £50million from potential suitors for Gallagher, whose wage demands are proving a stumbling block in contract negotiations as it stands.
Gallagher has been capped 11 times by the England national team and will no doubt be desperate to secure a spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the European Championships in the summer.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool, Gallagher said he ‘absolutely loved’ playing under Pochettino.
‘Obviously there is another year and a half left of my contract and I absolutely love playing with the manager,’ he told Sky Sports.
‘Playing almost every game has been incredible. Last season I was in and out the team and it wasn’t this enjoyable.
‘I just want to keep playing as much I can for Chelsea, keep trying to improve and try and be successful.’
