Chelsea are still willing to sell Conor Gallagher before Thursday’s transfer deadline but the midfielder will need some convincing to join Spurs, according to reports.

The 23-year-old has been a standout performer for the west Londoners this season but, as an academy graduate, his sale would count as pure profit and go a long way to ensuring the club stay within financial fair play limits.

Chelsea rejected several offers for Gallagher in the summer, the biggest of which was a £42million bid from West Ham, but they could now cash in.

According to The Times, Tottenham – who held talks over Gallagher in the summer – are seriously considering a renewed approach despite there only being two days left in the transfer window.

Any move for the England international was always likely to be opportunistic and Chelsea’s failure to offload any other academy players, namely Armando Broja and Trevoh Chalobah, could see them lower their asking price.

Spurs, though, would likely need to offload Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in order to proceed with a move for Gallagher, but the Dane looks set to remain in north London until the summer.

Speaking this week, Hojbjerg’s lawyer, Lars Halgreen, explained: ‘The player never asked to leave now.

‘He’s very ambitious for Tottenham and Denmark, [and] continuing to keep improving himself, like he did all his career. His only focus is Tottenham to finish the season well and to help as much as possible.’

According to the Evening Standard, there is also another obstacle to any deal for Gallagher: convincing the midfielder to move to north London.

He only has 18 months left on his contract and little progress has been made over a renewal, but ideally he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge and continue representing the club he has supported all his life.

He is reluctant to leave Chelsea right now, particularly as he has established himself as a key player under Mauricio Pochettino and is getting regular game time ahead of this summer’s Euros.

Chelsea would ideally like to keep Gallagher and prefer to offload either Broja or Chalobah, but the latter has received little concrete interest off the back of an injury-plagued campaign.

Broja, meanwhile, has interest from Fulham, West Ham and Wolves but so far only loan deals have been proposed – something that does not suit Chelsea.

If a club were to make an offer in the region of £45m for Gallagher Chelsea would almost certainly accept it, though Spurs are unlikely to go that high and the player himself will need to be convinced.
