Corruption, lack of accountability affecting national growth, development – ANAN

The President and Chairman of Council, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, Dr. James Neminebor, has labelled corruption, mismanagement and lack of accountability as one of the many reasons hindering national growth and development.

He made the disclosure while making his opening remark at the 29th Annual National Conference of ANAN held on Tuesday in Abuja.

Speaking on the theme ” Advancing Accounting Excellence in a changing world,” the president stressed that in the changing world with increasing disruptive economic challenges and technological innovations, financial transparency and governance have become increasingly imperative to advance the global economy.

He said, “As professionals, we must be proactive and adaptive in turning economic disruptions into opportunities for optimal development.

“Financial transparency and governance have become increasingly imperative in providing clear and accurate reporting for stakeholders access to reliable information.

“Without any iota of doubt, corruption, mismanagement, and lack of accountability hinder our nation’s growth and development.

According to him, financial transparency is not just a moral imperative but an economic necessity which ensures accountability, builds trust and promotes sustainable growth.

The ANAN president noted, “We must strengthen our institutions, enhance oversights and ensure consequences for misconduct. We must also empower citizens to have access to information and education and to participate in the budget process.

Neminebor also called for the integration of environmental sustainability into financial decisions and for the recognition of the impact of our actions on the planet.

The President explained that the essence of the conference is to enhance professional skills in conformity with the digital economy, where accountants can sit at their offices and solve solutions with the applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, and cloud computing, among others.

On his part, the ANANChief Executive Officer, Kayode Fasua, said, “The accounting profession is changing with realities. Therefore, the conference will help expose their members to these new technologies.

He revealed that about 6,000 of their members are participating in this year’s conference with an interest in sharing professional ideas and experiences on accounting dynamics.

Speaking on the economic challenges in the country, he appealed to President Tinubu to introduce economic policies that would bring succour and cushion the effects of the high inflation rate in the country.
