Netflix has officially greenlighted Nemesis, the first series under Power universe creator Courtney A. Kemp’s overall deal with the streamer. Created by Kemp and Tani Marole, the project had already been casting for a couple of months.
Matthew Law (Abbott Elementary, Ahsoka) and Y’Ian Noel (Lady in the Lake, Insecure) have been tapped for the titular leads. Also cast as series regulars are two Power alums, Domenick Lombardozzi and Jonnie Park, as well as Cleopatra Coleman (Black Rabbit, Clipped), Tre Hale (All-American, Platonic) and Ariana Guerra (CSI: Vegas, Marvel’s Helstrom).
Described as an action heist series in the vein of Power set in LA, the new series will film in Los Angeles.
Nemesis is the story of two men on either side of the law, the tale of what happens when an unstoppable force (an expert criminal), Coltrane Wilder (Noel), meets an immovable object (a brilliant police detective), Isaiah Stiles (Law). What starts as a series that aims to subvert the heist genre at every turn, amped with thrilling life-or-death stakes, family dynamics and explosive action, actually gives birth to an exploration of what drives us, sustains us, and ultimately destroys us.
Coleman plays Coltrane Wilder’s wife, Ebony Wilder. Hale plays Coltrane Wilder’s right-hand man Darren “Stro” Stroman. Lombardozzi (Tulsa King) plays Dave Cerullo. Park (Quiz Lady) plays Chris Choi, the crew’s getaway driver. Guerra plays Yvette Cruz, a LAPD Detective.
“Viewers are in for a ride with Nemesis, Courtney and Tani’s bold take on the crime drama genre,” said Nne Ebong, Netflix’s VP, Studio Scripted Series: “Courtney’s shows have proven to dominate culture and conversation, and it’s exciting to have this be the first project from our creative partnership.”
Kemp serves as showrunner on Nemesis, which she is executive producing with Marole, Chris Selak of Kemp’s End of Episode and Philipp Barnett. Mario Van Peebles (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) will direct and executive produce Episodes 1 and 2.
“Tani and I are excited to bring a hard-hitting psychological crime drama to Netflix, specific in location, but broad in universal themes of right and wrong, love and loss, and loyalty vs self-preservation,” Kemp said. “We are grateful to Bela, Peter, Jinny and Nne for their support, keeping this production in Los Angeles and getting local crews back to work.”
Noel is repped by Stride Management and Gersh. Lombardozzi is repped by Gersh and Leverage. Park is repped by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham. Guerra is repped by Pakula/King, Gartner Group and GGSSC.
