Max’s Crazy Rich Asians TV series has officially opened a development room led by Adele Lim who will serve as executive producer, writer and showrunner. Lim co-wrote the script for the hit Crazy Rich Asians feature from Warner Bros. released in 2018 with Peter Chiarelli.

Alongside Lim (via her 100 Tigers prod co), executive producers will also include Jon M. Chu (via his Electric Somewhere banner), who directed the film, and Kevin Kwan, who authored the novel of the same name that inspired the film and the upcoming series.

We understand there have been unofficial conversations with the original cast about possibly returning; however, there is no creative direction for the season, so it would be too early to speculate on the storyline. Sources close to production confirm to Deadline that the series will not replace the long-awaited sequel to the 2018 film as Chu and Warner Bros. Pictures continue to develop the project. Max confirmed the series will be a drama based on the book series by Kwan.

Crazy Rich Asians (book and film) follows Chinese-American Rachel (Constance Wu) and her fiancé Nick’s (Henry Golding) love story as they travel to visit his family and friends in his native Singapore. There are surprises in store for Rachel to discover before she walks down the aisle—including the fact that Nick’s family is extremely rich.

The ensemble cast also includes Gemma Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Nico Santos, Ronny Chieng, Jimmy O. Yang, Ken Jeong, Awkwafina, and Lisa Lu, among others.

Kwan’s first book Crazy Rich Asians was followed by China Rich Girlfriend, Rich People Problems and Lies and Weddings.

In addition to Lim, Chu and Kwan, executive producers also includes Nina Jacobson & Brad Simpson via their production company Color Force, which developed and produced the Crazy Rich Asians film and Naia Cucukov via Lim’s 100 Tigers. SK Global Entertainment will also produce, with Chloe Dan overseeing the project for the company.

Lim is represented by Paradigm and Ginsburg, Daniels, Kallis. Chu is represented Artists First; UTA and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman. Kwan is represented by CAA and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols. Cucukov is repped by Paradigm and Sean Marks.
