Nigeria’s U-19 women’s cricket team, the Junior Female Yellow Greens, are currently fine tuning their drills at the OMTEX Cricket Institute in India, ahead of the 2025 ICC Women’s U-19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Junior Yellow Greens will be flying Nigeria’s flag in the 16-nation tournament which will be played from January 18 to February 2.
The Nigerian team have played three tune up matches against the OMTEX U-19 team, winning one and losing the other two as they hope to get in good shape before the start of the tournament.
Their first test on Tuesday ended in a five wicket win against the Indians. Nigeria betted in the second innings and posted 104 runs for the loss of five wickets in 16.2 overs to beat the OMTEX team’s 103 for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs.
The Indians however bounced back in Wednesday’s and Thursday’s friendlies, snatching a 55-run and nine-wicket wins respectively.
Regardless of the result, Nigeria coach Sarah Bhakita acknowledged the progress the team has made in their training tour so far.
“It’s really a pleasure coming here and we have had great sessions in batting and other drills with the players,” Bhakita said via OMTEX’s Instagram handle.
After their training tour in India, the Nigerian team will play two warm up games against Pakistan and Scotland on January 13 and 15 respectively.
Their first World Cup game comes up against Samoa on January 18.
They will face test nation New Zealand in their second game of the tournament on Monday, January 20 and South Africa in the last group game two days later.
The Women’s U-19 World Cup will mark Nigeria’s second appearance at any cricket World Cup, six years after the men’s U-19 team also qualified for the 2019 edition in South Africa.
