Yet another appearance by the Crystal Palace co-owner, as Steve Parish always keen to promote himself in the media and desperate to try and drum up more interest and value on Marc Guehi.
Palace playing a dangerous game, as they turned down Newcastle United’s latest (fourth) bid for Guehi in recent days, a bid that was widely reported to have threatened the previous NUFC record of £63m (£59m plus £4 potential future add-ons) paid for Alexander Isak back in August 2022.
Only 12 days to go until the transfer window closes and quite clearly it is no coincidence that the Crystal Palace co-owner is not so keen to regularly volunteer to speak to the media about Marc Guehi, wanting to make as public as possible that they are keen (desperate) to sell the England defender, whilst claiming the exact opposite.
Marc Guehi has repeatedly refused to sign a new extended Palace contract as he clearly wants to leave, so Palace needing to sell this window or else the player’s value will significantly drop as he will have just 18 months left on his Palace contract when we get to the January 2025 window.
Steve Parish never keen to mention though that Palace are so desperate to boost the price of their top asset, due largely to Chelsea having a clause that entitles them to a large chunk of any transfer fee they receive, having sold Marc Guehi to Palace three years ago.
The Palace co-owner states that he’s got a longstanding positive relationship with Paul Mitchell, who he says is someone who he has a lot of respect for. Parish revealing that he has discussed the Marc Guehi situation/potential transfer with the Newcastle United sporting director.
I think the time is approaching when Newcastle United are going to be at the end of their tether and if Crystal Palace keep messing them around, aren’t open to doing a credible deal. Then NUFC may well walk away from their interest in Marc Guehi, leaving the South London in a potentially disastrous situation of having priced the defender out of a move to Newcastle United and pretending they have interest at that kind of price from other clubs, proved to be pure fantasy.
Steve Parish speaking to Talksport and asked about Newcastle United trying to buy Marc Guehi – 18 August 2024:
“I think you will find with these things, people have different relationships with different clubs.
“You try and make it work the best way possible.
“Everyone is trying to do the best for their club.
“We are always very respectful when we get a bid for a player.
“We are very respectful of Newcastle United and Paul Mitchell is somebody I have an incredible amount of time for.
“I have known him for a long time.
“He has been very, very good to me in football and we have a good relationship.
“So, he and I have had a chat about this [Marc Guehi potential transfer].
“Inevitably, the agents are involved and have got a point of view, they are decent guys.
“We have had conversations with other clubs that have expressed interest as well.”
