A civil society group, the Silver Lining for the Needy Initiative, has called on governments, organisations, businesses, and individuals to prioritise gender-responsive policies and action and take deliberate, bold steps towards transformation.

The group made the call on the sidelines of the ongoing 69th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York, during a session themed “From Declaration to Action: Evidence, Progress, and Gaps.”

This was contained in a statement on Friday and signed by the Digital Communications Assistant, SLNI, Janet Johnson.

The group’s president and convener of the event, Hauwa Abbas, in her welcome address, emphasised the importance of turning commitments into action.

“At SLNI, we believe that real change happens when we translate commitments into action, especially in the areas of health, education, and women’s empowerment.

“We must advocate for implementation of policies that break systemic barriers, invest in solutions that empower women, and build a future where every woman, irrespective of age, race, and economic status, can reach her full potential.

“It’s not enough to commit to gender equality; we must act decisively by implementing policies that tackle the root causes of inequality. Whether it’s expanding access to education, ensuring women’s economic empowerment, or addressing gender-based violence, our policies must be driven by evidence and a clear commitment to lasting change,” she stated.

Among other recommendations made, the group also urged governments and other stakeholders to invest in education, technology, and health, foster collaboration across sectors and hold themselves accountable.

“True progress cannot be achieved in silos. It’s time for governments, NGOs, and the private sector, to join forces. By working together, we can create solutions that are scalable, sustainable, and impactful.

“Invest in Education, Technology, and Health: The future of gender equality lies in ensuring that women and girls have the resources they need to thrive.

“Education, technology, and healthcare are the pillars upon which gender equality will be built. Investing in these areas will unlock the potential of millions, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to society.

“Hold Ourselves and Others Accountable: Accountability is the bedrock of progress. We must hold ourselves, our leaders, and our institutions accountable for the promises we make. We must track progress, share successes, and address setbacks,” the statement read.

SLNI called for swift action to ensure the reality of gender equality, stating, “The time for talk is over. It’s time to act. Together, we have the power to make gender equality a reality. Let’s move from declaration to action, from promises to measurable progress.”
