Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a violence-free festive season, vowing to minimise the activities of cultists in the state.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo stressed that security agencies are on high alert to ensure the safety of lives and property as the Yuletide approaches.

The statement read, “Governor Monday Okpebholo is determined to provide a safe and secure environment for citizens to go about their daily activities. Security agencies have been deployed to patrol strategic locations across the state, ensuring no lives are lost during the festive period.

“Since assuming office on November 12, 2024, the governor has prioritised tackling the security challenges he inherited, including widespread cult-related violence that plagued the state capital, Benin City.

“In his inaugural speech, Governor Okpebholo vowed to combat kidnapping and violent crimes, including cult-related killings, which have tarnished the state’s image and disrupted businesses for years. He assured residents that his administration would adopt a firm stance against criminal elements while improving security to revive farming and other business activities.

“During his maiden security council meeting, cultism was a key focus, with the governor emphasising that his administration will not tolerate further bloodshed. He has charged security agencies to act decisively to end these killings.”

Fred Itua further noted that the governor directed security operatives to intensify their efforts to rid the state of criminals and cultists, particularly in Benin City.

“Governor Okpebholo instructed security agencies to root out criminals wherever they may be hiding, ensuring that Edo State remains safe for all its citizens,” the statement added.

In response, security chiefs in the state pledged their full cooperation and swung into action immediately.

Their proactive measures have reportedly restored calm to Benin City, with multiple reports indicating a significant reduction in cult-related violence.

Security agencies have also issued stern warnings to those intent on disrupting peace in the state.

“Anyone persisting in criminal or cult-related activities will face mass arrests and swift prosecution. The Okpebholo-led administration will not compromise the peace of Edo State,” the statement concluded.

With these efforts, the government remains resolute in its mission to ensure a safe and peaceful Yuletide for all residents of Edo State.
