During the August 2 edition of SmackDown, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa entered Cleveland as the SmackDown Tag Team Champions, but the Bloodline emerged victorious and became the new WWE Tag Team Champions. While Jacob Fatu remains absent from television, the current situation for the tag team titles has been revealed.

As seen on the August 9 edition of Friday Night SmackDown, Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa made their way out as the WWE Tag Team Champions, despite the fact that Tonga Loa didn’t win the match last week, as he took Jacob Fatu’s spot, who is out of action at the moment.

Naturally, this made fans wonder about the current situation for the tag team titles since Fatu and Tama Tonga originally won them. While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer addressed the situation.

Meltzer stated that the current tag team champions are determined by Solo Sikoa’s selection. This means Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa, as well as Jacob Fatu upon his return, are eligible to defend the titles. Meltzer noted that WWE has not clarified this on television, but this is the internal explanation for the situation.

“The champions are whoever two men Solo picks, so Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa can defend them, Jacob Fatu when he comes back can defend them. They never did explain this on television but this is the WWE explanation.”

We have also reported on the timeline for Jacob Fatu’s return to WWE television, as he is expected to come back this month. With Roman Reigns expected to keep on dismantling The Bloodline in the coming weeks, we’ll have to see when they will find time to defend the Tag Team Championships as well.
