The Nigeria Customs Service, Tincan Island Command, has seized three containers loaded with 684 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 341.025kg valued at N682m.
The Customs Area Controller in charge of the command, Dera Nnadi, disclosed this at the command on Wednesday, while handing over the contrabands to officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
He added that the handing over of the contrabands was in furtherance of existing interagency collaboration and the Memorandum of Understanding between the NDLEA and NCS.
According to him, the command, having received actionable intelligence on the suspected importation of illicit dangerous drugs from one of the source countries, intercepted the three containers.
Giving details of the seizures, Nnadi said, a joint 100 per cent physical examination was conducted on a 40foot container with number MSMU 518030/2 on the 2nd of August 2024 and the examination revealed 77 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 38.5kg.
“Also, another 100 percent physical examination was conducted on a 40ft container with number MSMU 602957/0 on 8th Aug 2024 and the examination revealed 532 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 265.025kg.
“Again, a joint 100 per cent physical examination was conducted on a 40ft container with number FSCU 927461/3 on 8th of August 2024 and the examination revealed 75 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 37.5kg,” Nnadi stated.
The Tincan Island Customs boss revealed that they have commenced an investigation with the partner agency, the NDLEA on the importation.
Nnadi vowed that the command and indeed the NSC in general would deploy all necessary resources and strategies and in collaboration with other security and regulatory agencies check the menace of illegal importation of illicit and dangerous substances.
