Cynthia Erivo does NOT like your fan edits! Or wait… She does? Maybe?! It’s clearly a fine line for her!

In preparation for the release of Wicked next month, Universal Pictures just dropped a poster of Cynthia’s character Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s character Glinda. See it (below):

It CLEARLY draws inspiration from the poster for the original Broadway musical, but just has a few minor differences… See the OG (below):

But while the differences may have been subtle, they’re apparently very important to Cynthia!

A photo has been circulating around the web of a fan’s redesign of the movie poster to make it look more like the Broadway poster. You can see (below):

And while it may have been done in the spirit of good ol’ fun and love for the Broadway production, Cynthia is FUMING over it! On Wednesday, she took to Instagram with a SCATHING message about how the redesign is the “wildest” and “most offensive” thing. She wrote:

“This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen, equal to that awful Ai of us fighting”

She also equated it to another viral meme floating around out there of Glinda whispering into Elphaba’s ear asking if her “p***y” is green like the rest of her skin, which you can see HERE.

Cynthia wrote:

“Equal to people posing the question ‘is your ***** green’ None of this is funny. None of it is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us. The original poster is an ILLUSTRATION. I am a real life human being, who chose to look right down the barrel of the camera to you, the viewer… because, without words we communicate with our eyes. Our poster is an [sic] homage not an imitation, to edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me. And that is just deeply hurtful.”

She followed up the Story post with another of the official poster, writing:

“Let me put this right here, to remind you and cleanse your palette.”

Wow, so it’s safe to say she’s NOT a fan of fan art, right?? Well, that’s where people are confused… because just the other day, the 37-year-old re-shared a fan edit on her IG Story of Elphaba’s face edited onto a viral illustration of a war-torn soldier. See (below):

What?!?! Help us understand! Lolz!

On X (Twitter), fans didn’t hold back from criticizing Cynthia’s “dramatic” take:

“Talking bout some ‘wildest thing’ she ever seen… like gurl please ? Sit that dramatic ass down”

“Lmao not the switch up clocked”

“Ma’am no one is disrespecting you. The photo was edited to look like the original. That’s it, that’s all.”

“its not THAT serious”

“it’s not that deep girl”

“she is overreacting ngl”

“Diva behavior. People just wanted to mimic the classic poster.”

However, others sympathized with Cynthia and felt that if she feels offended by things, then fans should listen and try their best to accommodate that:

“I don’t fully agree with her, but at the same time I respect her point of view honestly”

“if she’s saying it’s offensive maybe we should listen?”

“i saw a tweet that said while no one meant harm with it the ‘is your p***y green’ thing could be interpreted in a racist way which we shouldn’t rule out”

“if you’re having any reaction to this other than ‘we’re sorry and we see you cynthia’ then u are apart of the problem and need to think of other people’s feelings”

“I see both sides, but it feels like we’re getting a bit too serious over a meme”

“Maybe let’s not invalidate her feelings”

“believe women”
