Marc Guehi could become a top transfer target for Manchester United this summer with Liverpool also interested in signing the Crystal Palace star.
United and Liverpool are both in the process of bringing in new sporting directors with Dan Ashworth approached over the new role at Old Trafford.
Newcastle United have placed Ashworth on gardening leave while his future is being resolved. Man United will have to agree a compensation fee with Newcastle or face waiting until 2026 with his notice period thought to be as long as two years.
Palace star Guehi, who joined the Eagles from Chelsea for £18million in 2021, has been tipped to leave south east London this summer.
Ashworth was interested in signing the England international for Newcastle and could revive that interest should his move to Old Trafford go through, the Daily Telegraph report.
Liverpool are also keen to sign Guehi. The Reds hope to appoint a new sporting director before the summer and are also searching for a replacement for Jurgen Klopp following the German’s shock decision to leave Anfield at the end of the season.
Guehi is on their list of targets but their new sporting director and manager will determine whether that interest is followed up on this summer.
Should Liverpool and United both make those key appointments in a timely fashion, it could prompt a bidding war between the two rivals.
Liverpool are reportedly considering two names to come in as their new sporting directors, seeking a long-term option having had three men in the role since Michael Edwards’ departure in 2022.
Former AC Milan director of football Frederic Massara and Nice sporting director Florent Ghisolfi are under consideration at Anfield.
Guehi meanwhile has developed into one of the best young defenders in the Premier League since leaving Chelsea two-and-a-half years ago.
The Blues are not thought to have included a buy-back option in that deal but reportedly do have the option to match any future bids for their former player.
