Manchester United director Dan Ashworth is one of the key figures driving the club’s transfer pursuit of Southampton wonderkid Tyler Dibling after also looking at him when he was at Newcastle United.

That’s according to a report from Give Me Sport, who add that Man Utd could face one issue now in trying to sign Dibling, with Southampton perhaps alerted to the fact that top clubs are starting to take notice of him, and therefore looking to tie him down to a new contract soon.

The report states that Southampton are not in a big hurry to do this immediately, as Dibling is tied down until 2026, but one imagines they would do well to anticipate the Red Devils and other top clubs.

Give Me Sport also suggest that Newcastle remain interested in the 18-year-old midfielder, despite Ashworth no longer being at St James’ Park, so this could end up being an intriguing transfer saga to follow in the months ahead.

Dibling transfer: Can Man United sign England’s next big wonderkid?

United have increasingly turned towards signing young players in recent times, with signings like Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro showing that the club are changing their recruitment approach after some failed big-name signings down the years.

Dibling could be a similarly exciting young player for MUFC to build around, with the England youth international looking potentially like the next big thing in this country, and with Old Trafford surely the kind of stage he’ll have the ambition to perform on at some point in his career.

It would certainly be exciting to see a midfield partnership of Dibling and Kobbie Mainoo, who could be a formidable combination for both United and England for years to come if this deal does come to fruition.

Still, Southampton will surely be no pushovers here, and will likely do what they can to extend the youngster’s contract in order to ensure they can get a big fee for the player if they ever do end up selling.
