Kelly Hyland is battling cancer. In a new interview published on Wednesday (May 29), the 53-year-old Dance Moms alum revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer after finding a lump in her breast in late March. “The first red flag was my significant weight loss,” Kelly shared with E! News. “I lost enough that others noticed and would ask for my dieting hacks, but there was nothing I had changed in my day-to-day to cause the loss.” Keep reading to find out more…After the weight loss, that’s when Kelly discovered the lump and immediately booked herself a mammogram. “I had just had one done eight months prior and the results came back clean,” Kelly recalled. “However, this new mammogram and sonogram did not, it came back showing a mass.” The biopsy then confirmed that the mass was malignant and subsequent testing revealed that she had invasive carcinoma stage 1, grade 3, meaning that her breast cancer is very fast-moving. “I went from clean results to a malignant mass in eight months,” Kelly said. “I was shocked that it had grown that quickly and scared of the battle I knew I was about to face.” Since the cancer was fast-moving, Kelly knew that she couldn’t wait until she saw her three kids – daughter Brooke, 26, and Paige, 23, and son Josh, 25 – in person to tell them the news. Kelly now lives in Florida while her kids live in Pittsburgh. “I would’ve liked to have told them in person, but a phone call was the best I could do given the circumstances,” Kelly acknowledged. “I did a four-way call with all of my kids because I wanted to tell them at the same time and make sure they were all given the same information.” After learning the news, which came as a huge shock to all of her kids, Josh had a very optimistic reaction. “I feel very hopeful that it is only at stage one, I feel like she caught it quickly,” Josh said. “I know my mom is strong enough to get through this.” Kelly is currently on the second of six initial chemotherapy treatments, which will be followed by surgery, radiation and then 11 more treatments She also noted all of her former Dance Mom co-stars are aware of her diagnosis and have been very supportive through it all.
