DC Comics has announced DC GO!, “a new frontier of webcomics” available exclusively on the DC Universe Infinite app—the company’s official digital subscription service for web, iOS, and Android.
Said to include “a mix of original webcomic content plus vertically reformatted DC and MAD Magazine classics,” DC GO! plans “to create fun, compelling, reader-friendly, mobile DC stories that readers will enjoy on the go.”
In the words of DC general manager Anne DePies, “We know fans love webcomics like Batman: Wayne Family Adventures, so the titles launching in the new DC GO! collection were created to appeal to readers of specific genres—drama, fantasy, comedy, mystery, action, romance, slice-of-life, and more—so that there’s a type of story for everyone to enjoy.”
Among the initiative’s launch titles are Harley Quinn in Paradise from writer CRC Payne (Batman: Wayne Family Adventures) and artists Siobhan Chiffon and Cathy Le (Archie Comics: Big Ethel Energy); Nothing Butt Nightwing from writer Patrick R. Young (Red Hood: Outlaws) and artist Moy R. Marco (West Coast Avengers); and Renaissance of Raven by Sina Grace, Nico Bascuñan, Katherine Lobo, and Carola Borelli.
© DC ComicsHarley Quinn in Paradise will see Dr. Harleen Quinzel “decide the best way to lay low is to plaster her face across every television in America and find true love on TV’s hottest reality dating show.” As she “heads for the show’s island setting,” Quinn is “ready to be the best contestant the program has ever seen” since “she’s playing to win by any means necessary.”
Meanwhile, Nothing Butt Nightwing concerns Dick Grayson as he “lands his biggest deep-cover operation yet—as an international supermodel! He’s got the eyes of the audience, the other models, and even a few agents. But he only has eyes for one thing…the Poison Ivy protégé on the hunt to steal the expensive (and environmentally harmful) jewels around the models’ necks.”
Rounding out the titles is Renaissance of Raven, in which the erstwhile Teen Titan is “pulled through an enchanted portal to the kingdom of Galonia.” Sent “hundreds of years into the past” she must “contend with a cabal of witches and the difficult choice of helping those in need or returning home.”
© DC ComicsTo further entice new subscribers, the company promises a DCUI subscription will further grant them access to vertically reformatted editions of its most inescapable titles, including Batman: Hush, All-Star Superman, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with more on the way. Free previews of Harley Quinn in Paradise and Nothing Butt Nighting are available to read at this link.
So, are you excited for these vertical webcomics you can read on your phone? Though said to appeal to all readers, DC Go!‘s launch titles already feel a bit same-y, what with an irreverent superhero rom-com starring Harley Quinn, a second irreverent superhero spy comedy focused on Nightwing’s famous ass, and a retelling of Army of Darkness with Raven. For kids? If you got into DC through ’90s Vertigo comics or back issues of New Gods, you may be disappointed. That said, we’re curious to see what the company has deemed fit to reformat from the Mad archives when DC! GO launches in earnest this November 22.
