It’s the most wonderful time of the year: awards season. We’ve had the Golden Globes. We’ve had the Critics’ Choice Awards. And now it’s obviously time for the Osca– wait a second, the Emmys?

That’s right, set your clocks back, folks, because we are in fact here to celebrate television favorites that might have debuted as far back as June 1, 2022. The long-delayed Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony would have been expected in September, but we were deep into the writers’ and actors’ strikes and the decision was made to wait out a resolution and shunt the celebration into January, which needs three more awards presentations (including two nights of Creative Arts Emmys) like Los Angeles needs a little more traffic.

Forget it, Jake, this is Awardstown. Focus instead on celebrating what was a rather enjoyable season of television, including the debut of FX’s The Bear (yes, debut—the Globes may just have feted Season 2, but this Emmys covers year one) and the epic finale of Succession, which your liveblog hosts, Mike Fleming Jr. and Joe Utichi, promise not to spoil this time, like at least one of them did during the Globes. Turns out Rosebud was his sled. Here’s hoping other Deadliners, like TV supremos Nellie Andreeva and Peter White, will be on hand too, to bring a little more common-sense insight to the evening.

Host Anthony Anderson charges into the evening with the memory of Jo Koy’s disappointing Globes stint fresh in mind — things can only get better under the guidance of an 11-time Emmy nominee — and we can focus on the year’s television highlights. With 27 noms, Succession lead the charge heading into the first Creative Arts evening, but other HBO megahits The Last of Us and The White Lotus were nearby with 24 and 23, respectively.

Could Apple TV+ hit Ted Lasso make it 3-for-3as the Television Academy’s favorite Comedy Series? It came into the awards with 21 nominations, but it’ll face strong competition from newcomers including The Bear, Wednesday and Jury Duty, as well as returning hits like Abbott Elementary, Barry, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Only Murders in the Building (the latter for its second season, not its third).

Over in drama series, genre treats from the likes of Andor, House of the Dragon, Yellowjackets and the aforementioned The Last of Us will compete with more down-to-earth fare like Better Call Saul, The Crown (for Season 5), Succession and The White Lotus. Well, some of them are more down-to-earth, anyway.

Join us in the comments as we settle into these much-delayed Emmys — let’s do this!
