Flags of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party
More than 48 hours after the governorship debate in Ondo State, between the candidates of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, both parties, on Tuesday, attacked each other over the performance of their candidates at the debate.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is the candidate of the APC while Agboola Ajayi is the standard-bearer of the PDP, both contesting the governorship election coming up on November 16.
The two candidates faced each other at the debate last Sunday, where they spoke on their plans for the state if elected.
The Commissioner for Information, Mr Wale Akinlosotu, in a statement, rated Aiyedatiwa to have performed better than the PDP candidate in the debate.
Akinlosotu, in a statement in Akure, described the debate as another opportunity for the governor to showcase his achievements across all sectors of the state economy, “which he delivered to the satisfaction of all amid loud ovation from the gathering.”
He stated, “The governor’s performance at the debate is a confirmation of the fact that APC has a good candidate, a reliable, tested and trusted candidate, who has proven his ability to deliver on the promise and take the state to higher heights.”
Akinlosotu said the governor put up “a superlative performance which left his opponent (Ajayi) bewildered and making up with lies.”
He added that Aiyedatiwa had taken governance to another level in the state in the last 10 months.
“Aiyedatiwa, who hinged the development on the achievements of APC government in the state, exuded confidence that he had the support of the people of Ondo State to win the November 16 election with a clear margin, based on his known “antecedents, fitness, integrity, character and performance in office.
“The APC flagbearer, who expressed surprise that the PDP candidate and former deputy governor could tell lies with ease purportedly to score cheap political points, however, advised Ajayi to learn to say nothing but the truth,” the commissioner stated.
On the contrary, the Special Adviser, Media/Publicity of the PDP Campaign Organisation, Mr Ayo Fadaka, in a statement, said the commissioner’s statement was a misrepresentation of facts of the event, which “remains fresh in the memory of the people and still obtainable on the Internet.”
The statement read, “The world is amazed at the quality and content of a governor that was clearly unable to answer questions, give a statistical analysis of issues that concern the state, fidgety and poorly coordinated through the duration of the programme.
“He was so clay-footed and not honest enough to declare publicly how much he has personally appropriated as his monthly security votes.
“He was so bereft of facts on all issues he superintends, Ondo State has never been this unlucky.
“Our desire is to have a governor who has the requisite experience to discharge the responsibilities of the office exquisitely.
“While we understand the precarious situation the information commissioner found himself in and the need for him to at least launder the depreciating image of his boss, we urge him not to issue statements that will call to question his competence in the use of words, ability to give accurate accounts of events and this because his report of the debate is a direct opposite of the event.”
