The Ekere Descendants of Alaka, a community in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, has embarked on authentication of genuine ownership of land and property in the community to checkmate the illicit activities of land speculators and suspected fraudsters.
To this end, the community has inaugurated an 11-man land verification committee, headed by Mr. Murphy Omavwowha, to oversee the verification exercise for the next three years.
The chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ekere community, Hon. John Enakireru, told journalists during the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday that “the land verification committee was set up to oversee the protection and prevention of their descendants’ land and property from being fraudulently acquired or confiscated by anybody, whether indigene or foreigner.”
Enakireru noted that the committee’s membership comprised people of high integrity in who the community has absolute confidence as persons with the dexterity to do the job.
He said, “The mandate of the committee comprises taking a second look at the records of those who bought land and built property on the family lands, whether they bought such land genuinely or bypassed the family in the process, or not.
“Also, the committee will ascertain the scope of the family landed property in the Uvwie community.
“The committee was set up to ensure that the lands within the community are properly verified and ascertained to prevent losing them to fraudsters and to also check whether those who built did so genuinely with or without the family permission to do so.”
Speaking further, the BoT chairman maintained that the community was committed to protecting their territory in Effurun against any form of land speculation and for the preservation of future generations.
The inauguration and administration of the oath of office on the committee members were conducted by Pastor Dickson Sam Ejedegba, a cleric in the locality.
Those sworn in as members of the committee comprised Mr. Omavwowha Otocha as chairman; Mr. Wilfred Onoyake – vice chairman; Mr. Vincent Avwevughogho – Secretary; Mr. Billy Deke – Assistant Secretary; and six others.
In response, Mr Otocha, chairman of the committee pledged that he and his team would work tirelessly to ensure the success of the committee.
He assured of his “readiness to pilot the affairs of the community by liaising with elders in conducting the land verification exercise, and if need be, recover any controversial ones, for the interest, good and the development of Ekere Descendants.”
Also speaking, an elder in the community, Chief Abraham Ejedegba, remarked that “the committee is duty bound to work for the interest of the Ekere Descendants.”
