Demi Moore’s Golden Globe win earlier this year may have been her first major acting award, but her win at Sunday night’s SAG Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Lead Role proves that Moore has a lot more accolades on the horizon.
“The Golden Globes was such a shock,” said Moore in a virtual backstage after the ceremony. “There’s been beauty and joy in each moment.”
Moore won for her role as Elizabeth in The Substance, a fading celebrity who takes a black-market drug that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself. Though horror films are often overlooked, Moore added backstage that “you know when there’s truth and humanity in a performance. It’s what we connect to, regardless of what the genre is.”
Also nominated in the same category as Moore was Pamela Anderson for The Last Showgirl, Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Karla Sofía Gascón for Emilia Pérez and Mikey Madison for Anora.
“This is extraordinary and so deeply meaningful,” Moore said as she accepted her award. “I was thinking about this night and I realized I hadn’t thought back to when I got my membership to this incredible organization… It gave me purpose. It gave me direction. I was a kid who had no blueprint for life.”
In addition to what acting has meant for her, Moore had a bit of advice for anyone pursuing acting now. “As the actors who are having to do it all, I just encourage you, don’t lose sight of the human connection. That’s the work that we do. It’s to be connected to one another.”
