A major disaster was averted in Jos, Plateau State, on Thursday after a fuel-laden tanker spilled its contents on the busy Bauchi Road axis.
Swift intervention by emergency responders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, prevented what could have been a tragic incident.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, caused panic among residents and road users as they hurried to work.
The tanker, en route to a filling station to offload its fuel, reportedly lost control and spilled over 15,000 litres of petrol onto the road.
Speaking to The PUNCH, a resident, Musa Abdullahi, who witnessed the incident, said, “The Bauchi Junction along Bauchi Road was temporarily closed after the tanker spilled fuel on the road. The quick response of the Fire Service, FRSC, NSCDC, police, and other security agents prevented further damage.
“Motorists were redirected to alternative routes to ensure safety while the tanker completed its offloading. Their efforts were commendable, as the situation was brought under control swiftly.”
Confirming the incident, the Public Education Officer of the FRSC in Plateau State, Peter Yakubu, said prompt action by emergency responders ensured the safety of lives and property.
“Our men were alerted early this morning about a tanker that spilled fuel on Bauchi Road after the driver lost control. We immediately deployed our personnel to the area, alongside the Fire Service and other emergency responders.
“The affected road was barricaded to prevent any untoward incident, and the situation was managed effectively. Thankfully, no lives were lost, and apart from the spillage, there was no other damage. We thank God for averting a disaster,” Yakubu said.
As of the time of filing this report, the affected section of Bauchi Road had been reopened to traffic, and residents and motorists were seen going about their daily activities without further disruption.
