An investigation has revealed a disturbing trend on a pro-suicide website, where over 700 individuals in the UK have sought partners to die with.

The site, which remains unnamed, has a members-only section dedicated to pairing people for suicide, leading to multiple double suicides. Additionally, the investigation by the BBC uncovered evidence of predators exploiting vulnerable women on the platform.

One tragic case involved Brett, a 28-year-old man who traveled from the Midlands to Scotland in December 2019 to meet a woman he had connected with through the site. They both took their lives together in an Airbnb. Brett’s mother, Angela Stevens, has since spent years investigating the site, particularly its ‘partners thread,’ which she describes as a dangerous place similar to a dark version of a dating app. Angela expressed her grief, saying, “I miss everything about Brett, his smile, his infectious laugh.” She criticized the site as “absolutely vile,” where people are paired for a tragic end.

The BBC’s investigation found that this ‘partners thread’ contains over 5,000 posts from users worldwide, discussing and promoting suicide methods. Previously, in March, a BBC investigation linked the site to the deaths of more than 130 people in the UK who may have used a specific chemical promoted on the site.

Using an anonymous account, the BBC examined the site’s content, where users share personal details, including their age, gender, location, and preferred method of suicide, to find a partner. One user, Linda, posted in 2023 seeking a suicide partner. Tragically, she met a man from the forum at a hotel in Romford, where they both ingested a toxic chemical and died together on July 1, 2023. Linda’s sister, Helen Kite, was devastated to find her sister “lying next to the body of a total stranger.” Helen condemned the forum for preying on desperate individuals and causing “untold misery and suffering” for their families. Shockingly, Helen’s other sister, Sarah, also used the forum and took her life in September 2023, overwhelmed by grief after Linda’s death.

The investigation also highlighted the presence of predators on the site. In a 2022 Glasgow court case, 31-year-old Craig McInally was found to have manipulated multiple young women seeking a suicide partner. He coerced a 25-year-old woman into visiting his home under the pretense of “practicing” suicide and subjected her to repeated choking until she lost consciousness.

Authorities later discovered that McInally had targeted several vulnerable women on the site, offering them guidance and support in their suicidal thoughts. One of his victims was 22-year-old Romanian student Roberta Barbos, who met him once before taking her life in February 2020.
