‘Doctor Who’ Casts Jonah Hauer-King In Next Season; Nicola Coughlan Joins Christmas Special

Some casting news from the “Into the Whoniverse” panel Friday at San Diego Comic-Con. It was announced that The Little Mermaid star Jonah Hauer-King will be joining the next season of Doctor Who, playing a character that will be part of Ruby Sunday’s story.

Additionally, Bridgerton‘s Nicola Coughlan revealed she has joined the cast of the Doctor Who Christmas special. She’ll play Joy “a determined woman whose life is changed forever when she meets the Doctor.” You can watch her announcement below, which includes a first look at the special.

Couglan currently stars as Penelope Featherington in Netflix’s Bridgerton. Her other credits include the starring role of Claire Devlin in the Channel 4/Netflix sitcom, Derry Girls. She also starred in the Channel 4 and Tubi original comedy series Big Mood opposite Lydia West, and in the feature comedy Seize Them! with Aimee Lou Wood, Nick Frost, and Lolly Adefope. She is currently filming the independent feature The Magic Faraway Tree opposite Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy.

Hauer-King most recently starred on the big screen opposite Halle Berry in 2023’s The Little Mermaid. He recently wrapped shooting the high-concept romantic comedy The Threesome from Star Thrower Entertainment (King Richard), Filmopoly and Jupiter Peak.

As we reported earlier, the latest Doctor Who spinoff was announced during the panel. The BBC and Disney+ have ordered The War Between The Land And The Sea, a five-part spinoff series starring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw alongside existing Doctor Who stars Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrien.
