The Nigerian Medical Association, Kano State Branch, has announced the immediate withdrawal of services from the Emergency Paediatric Unit of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

This action follows the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum given to the state governor, Abba Yusuf, to dismiss the State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Amina Abdullahi HOD, over the alleged assault of a female doctor at the hospital.

The Public Relations Officer of NMA Kano, Dr Muhammad Musa, confirmed the strike on Wednesday, stating that it results from the Kano State Government’s failure to take concrete action.

“An investigation by the Ministry of Health confirmed that the doctor was not at fault in the incident, affirming that she acted with full professionalism in her duties.

“Despite this, no action has been taken to address the misconduct of the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, who led the assault and harassed a healthcare worker carrying out her duties under extremely challenging conditions.

“NMA Kano has therefore resolved to withdraw all medical services at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital indefinitely, effective from noon today, 6th November 2024.”

He said the action would not be reversed until the government dismisses the commissioner, provides adequate staffing and resources, and improves security measures.

“Immediate steps must be taken to meet the minimum staffing requirements, ensuring doctors are not forced to work under conditions that compromise their safety and patients’ health.

“Provision and maintenance of adequate security for all units within the hospital are essential to protect healthcare workers and patients.”

He reiterated the NMA’s commitment to the highest standards of medical care and patient safety, adding that the action emphasises the urgency of justice and reforms to protect healthcare professionals.

“We call on the government to act swiftly and decisively to restore confidence in Kano State’s healthcare system and ensure a safe working environment for all medical personnel,” he concluded.

The commissioner denied the assault allegations against female doctors and challenged the association to proceed with the strike.

As services are withdrawn, patients reliant on Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital are advised to seek alternative healthcare facilities until the issues are resolved.
