Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wants to see another match-winning contribution from Andre Onana when the Reds take on Man City in the 192nd Manchester derby.

Our goalkeeper has been dealt a lot of criticism in his first season at Old Trafford, although his form since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations has vastly improved.

Onana was key to United’s hard-fought FA Cup win at Nottingham Forest during the week. The Cameroon international will hope he can be just as influential at the Etihad Stadium this evening.

Ahead of the derby, Ten Hag was asked about Onana and he gave his verdict of the goalkeeper’s first Premier League campaign.

“I think he’s doing very well,” Ten Hag told reporters, as quoted by ManUtd.com. “If I assess his season so far where I think he’s adapted to the Premier League, I think he has very good performances in the Premier League.

“What you see is he’s progressing and I think he’s doing very well lately, very good performances. So, he has to see this as a base and step up here.”

Onana has seven clean sheets to his name in the Premier League, but we know it will be a huge ask to come with from the Etihad with an eight clean sheet.

It’s a positive sign that Onana can see our keeper showing progress. Perhaps the former Ajax and Inter Milan stopper can take confidence from that.

“I think everyone is seeing now how he’s a very good goalkeeper, but he needs a challenge,” the manager added.

“And from these challenges he progressed. That is what I see in this moment when I see him keeping across the season.”
