Raymond Domenech does not seem particularly excited by Roberto De Zerbi and his debut on the bench of Olympique de Marseille.
Raymond Domenech rarely misses the opportunity to criticize a foreign Ligue 1 coach, especially when he believes that he enjoys preferential treatment from the media and supporters. And even more so when he is in charge of Olympique de Marseille… The former coach of the French team has certainly already been more virulent and cutting with former technicians who officiated on the bench of OM, such as Marcelo Bielsa, Jorge Sampaoli and Igor Tudor, but we already feel that Roberto De Zerbi will not have a large margin of error in his eyes.
After the draw (2-2) conceded by the Phocéens on their pitch at the Orange Vélodrome against the Stade de Reims on Sunday, at the end of the 2nd day of Ligue 1, Domenech posted a comment and a short analysis of the match which reveals what he thinks of the Italian.
“OM-Reims, 2-2, goals, and with this OM, we’re going to see a lot of them this year in both directions… And bravo to Luka Elsner, the Reims coach, who knew how to find the words to reorganize his team”wrote Raymond Domenech. We know that the former strongman of the Blues prefers coaches who offer a disciplined game based on defensive solidity at all costs. This is not normally the approach of Roberto De Zerbi, whose teams are generally more attractive offensively than in their own half of the field.
He had turned on Sampaoli and Bielsa
We just hope that Roberto De Zerbi will not be entitled to the same sallies as his predecessors if the results do not follow. Domenech had declared about Sampaoli and his method:
“I’ve been saying it since the beginning, when you succeed, when you score, everything is fine, but when things get a bit stuck up front and things are not as good, that’s where we end up, and it’s going to continue like that. And if it continues like that, he’ll go straight to Père-Lachaise.” As for Marcelo Bielsa, whom he nevertheless respects, he had drawn the conclusion that his teams
“always end their season with a damp squib.”
Raymond Domenech has not coached a professional team since his stint at FC Nantes in 2020-2021. His team had not won any of the eight matches in which he officiated on the bench.
