It was only two months ago that Pau Cubarsi made his first-team debut for FC Barcelona, appearing in a Copa del Rey clash against Unionistas de Salamanca.
Days later, the then 16-year-old defender made his La Liga bow, in an away match against a tricky opponent in Real Betis.
Even though Barcelona conceded two goals on the night on their way to a win, Cubarsi stood out with his performance on the night at Estadio Benito Villamarin.
Lewandowski amazed
So much so that, the teenage defender’s display left star teammate Robert Lewandowski astounded and questioning the youngster’s age.
Indeed, as revealed by TV3, Lewandowski was absolutely surprised by the level Cubarsi showed on the night against Real Betis.
In fact, as per the report, after the match, the veteran superstar pulled the La Masia graduate aside in the dressing room and had a conversation that went something as follows:
Lewandowski: “Pau, one question: how old are you?”
Cubarsi: “I am 16 years old.”
Lewandowski: “I told you to tell me how old you are. Don’t fool me.”
Cubarsi: “I promise you I’m 16.”
Lewandowski: “I can’t believe you made such a great game at the age you are, I’ve never seen it.”
Sky’s the limit for Cubarsi
Since that breakthrough performance against Real Betis, Cubarsi has just gone from strength to strength at Barcelona, becoming a regular in Xavi’s defensive unit.
The youngster recently churned out two more fine displays in high-pressure encounters against Napoli and Atletico Madrid, playing a role in Barcelona’s victories.
Following that, Cubarsi also earned his maiden call-up to the Spanish national team and could be in line to make his debut for La Roja in the upcoming games against Colombia and Brazil.
