Civil rights advocate Aisha Yesufu has voiced her opinion regarding the recent defection of two members of the Abia State House of Assembly to the Labour Party.
She stated that they should be prepared to vacate their seats.
The two lawmakers, formerly of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), defected to the Labour Party on Tuesday. Mr. Iheanacho Nwogu, representing Osisioma North State Constituency, and Mr. Fine Ahuama, representing Osisioma South State Constituency, were officially welcomed into the ruling party by Governor Alex Otti.
Expressing her disapproval of the lawmakers’ actions, Aisha Yesufu, a prominent figure within the Labour Party and a staunch supporter of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, criticized the defections. Through her official social media handle, she remarked, “Hope they are ready to also lose their seats. This nonsense where people are voted on a party ticket and then decamp to join the ruling party needs to be punished by the law. You should have the right to decamp, but you must forfeit the seat you won on another platform.”
