Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has stepped in to help Zainab Jummai Ado Bayero, one of the daughters of the late Emir of Kano, along with her brother and mother, who were on the verge of being evicted from their Lagos apartment.

The Governor’s spokesperson, Mr. Sanusi Bature, stated that Governor Yusuf arrived in Lagos early on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, to meet with Mr. Sunel Kumar, the General Manager of the apartment where the Ado Bayero family has been living since the beginning of the year. Kumar had insisted on evicting them that day.

Bature explained that the Governor’s intervention followed an appeal by Princess Zainab Bayero, who had expressed in newspapers that her family had been neglected by the royal family after the death of her father, the late Emir Alhaji Ado Bayero.

In a statement, Princess Zainab expressed her gratitude: “You came at the right time, we were about to be forcefully evicted from the facility for our inability to pay the rent. They said today is final, we must move out by 3:00 pm, and you came just fifteen minutes to the time. They had already mobilized youths to remove us from the apartment. Alhamdulillah for your arrival.”

Bature added that the Governor’s action was driven by a concern for the image of the royal family and Kano: “The matter did not portray the royal family and Kano in good light. They are not only members of the Royal Family, they are our Muslim sisters and brother, currently in need.”

The Governor’s kind gesture came despite the Emirate tussle rocking Kano State mainly between Emir Muhammad Sanusi II who the Governor backs and Aminu Ado Bayero, who is from the late Bayero’s royal family. The matter has not been resolved yet as the case is pending before the court.
