But in dramatic late scenes, Cameroon scored twice to steal second-place in Group C on goal difference and break Gambian hearts.

The Indomitable Lions will now face Nigeria in the round-of-16 and their relief in the dressing room was clear to see.

Cameroon legend Eto'o joined the players in wild celebrations and broke down in tears.

The ex-Barcelona striker is the country's all-time leading goalscorer and inspired the nation to AFCON glory twice.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was also filmed celebrating with his teammates after being a shock omission from the starting XI.

Eto'o is president of the Cameroon FA and it is claimed his personal feud with Onana was the reason for the goalkeeper's absence.

Cameroon had taken the lead on the night through Karl Toko Ekambi before goals from Gambia stars Ablie Jallow and Ebrima Colley turned the match on its head.

The Scorpions were still going through when an own-goal from James Gomez levelled things up in the 85th minute, but Christopher Wooh completed Cameroon's stunning turnaround in stoppage time.

While the Indomitable Lions live to fight another day, AFCON 2023 has already seen a number of massive shocks.

Hosts Ivory Coast have been knocked out, so have Algeria and Ghana, with the Black Stars immediately sacking manager Chris Hughton as a result.
