Two persons, including a driver and his passenger, lost their lives when their vehicle crashed into a stationary truck along the Onipepeye area of the Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway on Wednesday.
PUNCH Metro learnt from the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, in a telephone conversation on Thursday, that the incident which occurred at about 8 pm, involved five persons who were occupants of a Space Wagon car with number plate AAB 255 AE.
Odutola said the impact of the collision led to the death of the driver and a female passenger while other occupants of the vehicles sustained varying degrees of injuries.
She added that the injured victims were immediately taken to hospital while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at a morgue.
She said, “The Mitsubishi Wagon had four passengers and was travelling from Sagamu to Abeokuta. Meanwhile, the Mercedes truck was parked on the road due to a mechanical issue.
“When the driver of the Mitsubishi Space Wagon sighted the truck, he lost control and collided with it from the rear. As a result, both the driver and a female passenger died at the scene while both vehicles were damaged.
“The injured victims were taken to the hospital while the deceased were taken to the Idera Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.”
Also speaking on the incident in a telephone conversation with our correspondent, the spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, noted that the driver of the truck fled the scene.
He, however, commiserated with the families of the deceased while urging motorists to avoid speeding.
“Both the injured and the dead victims are from the Mitsubishi space wagon. The driver of the truck who caused the accident ran away and left the truck on the road.
“While TRACE, FRSC and the police commiserate with the families of the crash victims, motorists are again urged to avoid night travels and also excessive speed, because of its attendant consequences,” Akinbiyi said.
