Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has emphasised the need for immediate attention to the growing issues of drug abuse and domestic violence in the North-west region of the country.
The speaker stated this during the flag-off event of Nigeria’s Northwest Zonal Sensitization Against Drug Abuse and Domestic Violence in Kaduna on Monday.
Abbas highlighted the alarming rise in drug abuse, citing a 25% increase in the Northwest over the past three years, with a 28% surge in drug seizures in Kaduna State alone in 2023.
“The situation is dire, and we must act swiftly to protect our youth from the destructive allure of drugs. We must also uphold the rights and dignity of every citizen, particularly women, who are disproportionately affected by domestic violence,” he said.
Abbas noted that domestic violence is a pervasive issue, with nearly 35% of women nationwide experiencing some form of abuse. In the Northwest, the situation is even more alarming, with up to 40% of women in Kano encountering domestic abuse.
To address these challenges, Abbas emphasised the importance of a multi-faceted approach, involving government agencies, community leaders, and non-governmental organisations.
He praised the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in bolstering the capacity of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and introducing robust legal reforms to combat domestic violence.
Abbas also highlighted the role of traditional and religious leaders in promoting cultural change and zero tolerance for abuse.
“We must work together to create a safer and more secure future for every Nigerian,” he stressed.
The Nigeria Northwest Zonal Sensitisation Against Drug Abuse and Domestic Violence initiative aims to educate citizens about the dangers of drug abuse and domestic violence, provide support services for victims, and promote community-based solutions.
“We must unite our efforts to protect our youth, uphold the rights and dignity of every citizen, and create a safer and more just society for all,” Abbas concluded.
