It appears as if Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong might have reached a potential impasse, as a report from SPORT claims that the midfielder does not want to negotiate any extension with the club nor does he want to leave the team in the summer.

This means the former Ajax midfielder, who joined Barcelona in 2019, wants to see out his current contract that he signed in 2020 and which runs until the summer of 2026.

A lot has been said about De Jong’s immediate future at Barcelona over the last few weeks. As such, we reported a few days ago that Barcelona did their job by offering him an extension three months back, but the player has not responded to the advancements yet.

As a result, Barcelona have been forced to take drastic measures and in that regard, knowing that the midfielder might have a market, especially in England, they have slapped a €100 million price tag for his transfer.

De Jong is unresponsive

Barcelona are aware that offers will come in for the player, but their priority is not to sell him. Instead, they aim to secure a long-term renewal by encouraging the player to take a bold step forward in lowering his salary.

The Dutchman, however, is unwilling to alter the contract he signed, which involved deferring amounts that have impacted him. He also rejects any pressure to leave and is not currently inclined to either depart or renew.

Both De Jong and his representatives are growing exhausted of being in the spotlight for this matter, especially given the significant sporting crisis at Barça. The logical approach would be to concentrate efforts on attempting to salvage the season.

Barcelona want to tie him on a long-term deal

Barça have been trying to get De Jong to sign a long-term contract, but they haven’t heard back from him or his team.

It seems like he wants to stay with the club and is not interested in leaving right now. De Jong likes being in Barcelona and thinks it’s too early to talk about staying for a long time.

Right now, we will have to wait and see if Barcelona try to push De Jong to sign a contract, but there isn’t much they can do. The club’s plan was for him to agree to a more reasonable contract to help with the team’s budget.

If they can not agree on the terms, they might consider letting him transfer to another team. Some big clubs like PSG, Manchester United, and Chelsea are interested in him.

But it would be as De Jong would need to agree to it, and right now, that’s not something he’s considering.
