Sandro Tonali last played for Newcastle United in the 1-0 home defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

That Champions League defeat just over nine months ago, the Italy international coming off the bench on 25 October 2023.

It is now only five weeks away before Sandro Tonali is available once again to Eddie Howe.

The home Premier League match against Tottenham on Sunday 1 September is the match immediately following the end of his ten month suspension.

Eddie Howe has been talking about this eventual return and thinks that since Sandro Tonali came back for pre-season training, with not long left of his ban remaining, the Head Coach can definitely sense the midfielder is more than ready for it, fully focused and keen to make up for lost time and the debt he owes to both NUFC and the fans.

Eddie Howe talking about Sandro Tonali ahead of the new season:

“Sandro Tonali has come back really fit and focused.

“You can see a change in his demeanour.

“There is definitely a change in him, in terms of [how he is] feeling as he is closer to playing.

“It is very difficult when you have that stretch ahead of you and you are not going to play competitively for such a length of time.

“He now looks ready to play, ready to make a difference.

“He does feel like an absolute new signing and somebody who we desperately missed last year.

“He will feel like he has got points to prove, objectives to hit.

“He came here with very clear motivations to be successful.

“He is a deep thinker and someone who wants to do very well.

“I have no doubt he will.”
