Eddie Howe has rubbished reports that Newcastle have made a play to sign Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey and addressed reports linking Callum Wilson with an exit.

With Thursday’s January transfer deadline looming large, Newcastle are hoping to bring in signings to aid their injury-ridden squad.

Reports from The Athletic had suggested that the Magpies had approached Villa over a potential deal for highly-coveted central midfielder Ramsey.

However, Eddie Howe sought to distance the club from such reports when asked on Monday.

‘Incorrect,’ the Newcastle manager bluntly said at his press conference ahead of Newcastle’s midweek game against Villa.

Financial Fair Play restrictions have hampered the club’s ability to make big offers for players in this window.

Miguel Almiron, Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson have all been linked with potential exits to free up cash for late arrivals.

Wilson, in particular, is said to be available for just £18million, although Howe, once again, reaffirmed his stance on the striker’s future at the club.

‘Callum is 100 per cent committed just like Kieran [Trippier],’ he added.

‘That is why I was surprised by the noise about Callum. He is currently injured. From his perspective and our perspective, there is nothing in it.’

When asked about his ideal end to the window, the 46-year-old said: ‘Keeping the squad intact, as a manager, would be A1 for me.

‘But, as I said so many times, we are guardians of the club’s future and we want to make the right decisions for the club’s future. We don’t want to breach FFP and that’s where I will support the decisions made for the long-term future.’
