Edinson Cavani settles accounts with PSG

The story dates from a few years ago now and it caused a lot of ink to flow. Top scorer in the history of PSG at the time, Edinson Cavani had left the Parisian club through the back door. The Uruguayan striker refused to extend in 2020 and thus decided to join Manchester United free of any contract. This decision had caused him to alienate a good part of the Ile-de-France supporters, especially since he had left the club during the famous Covid summer with the Final 8. PSG, without its striker, had therefore bet on Mauro Icardi (disappointing ) then Choupo-Moting or even Draxler (in addition to the trio Neymar, Mbappé, Di Maria).

Many, however, had not forgiven Edinson Cavani for this decision to “abandon” his team in one of the most important periods in the history of the Parisian club. But the Uruguayan never gave his version of the facts. It’s done since he has just given an interview to ESPN. During this, he notably talks about his decision to extend the adventure with Boca Juniors but also his turbulent summer of 2020. “In all the clubs I left, I did it with the same peace of mind. Because I have always done everything. As if I had been a supporter all my life, that’s how I gave my all. The proof at PSG…”he said before continuing.

Edinson Cavani felt used

“When I left PSG, it was because my contract was ending and they didn’t offer to renew it. They had planned for me to be released. The end of the season came, the pandemic hit and they played this ‘mini Champions League’, this strange format. When they knew that the Champions League was going to be played, they started calling me because they wanted me to play in this competition. I have my principles, and I know that I give the maximum where I am, because there is a club which trusts you and which pays you, so I give everything I have. But if something goes wrong, I’ll tell you. That’s how it happened. I said that I was not going to renew my contract, because they wanted to do it, so that they had this competition in attack, because there was this competition.explained the Uruguayan international. He then explained that he had therefore been upset by the treatment of PSG, who therefore wanted to recover him only to play in the competition.

“How can you not take Cavani into this competition, even if you have great players? Why didn’t you give me this opportunity sooner, why didn’t you tell me you trusted me and wanted me to continue? Afterwards, I would have made the decision to continue or not. But the end came and I left at peace with myself because I follow my principles. I would have liked to leave with a full stadium, but no, I felt that it was the time to leave this PSG, that it stopped there in this way and that there was no need to think about it longer. I’m like that because I live it to the fullest and I don’t hold anything back. » This is clear and explains a lot of things. Four years later, Edinson Cavani has settled his scores with PSG. And if he seems to have turned the page, reading his statements, we sense a man touched by the management of PSG in this matter in the summer of 2020.
