Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday, stated that the Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the 21st September governorship election, Asue Ighodalo, and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, possess the competence to further develop the state.

The Governor, speaking at the party’s campaign event in Igarra, Akoko Edo, emphasised that governance is a continuous process and highlighted the importance of ensuring that capable individuals with the necessary capacity, competence, and empathy, lead the people.

He said, “I brought Ighodalo and Ogie to Akoko Edo to let you know that they are competent and will further develop the state.

“Government is a continuous process, and there is a need to ensure that capable hands, people with the capacity, competence, and those with empathy, lead the people.”

The Governor praised the people for their consistent support for the PDP, noting that Akoko-Edo has long been marginalised. He reaffirmed his commitment to changing this narrative by ensuring equity and fairness, including giving Akoko-Edo significant positions and laying the foundation for a polytechnic in the area, recognising the brilliance and intelligence of its people.

In his welcome address, Deputy Governor Godwin Omobayo thanked the Governor for granting Akoko-Edo significant positions, stating that Obaseki is the only Governor who has done so for the people of Akoko-Edo.

He refuted claims that a group in Akoko Edo had endorsed the APC candidate, describing the group as seeking financial gain through the endorsement.

Omobayo urged the people to come out en masse to vote for the PDP on 21st September, assuring them that there was no need to be afraid or intimidated.

The Local Government Council Chairman, Tajudeen Alade, commended Governor Obaseki for his contributions to Akoko-Edo and praised the PDP candidate, Ighodalo.

A PDP chieftain, Tunde Akogun, criticised the APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, as being overly reliant on Adams Oshiomhole and other APC leaders. He assured Ighodalo that Akoko-Edo would support him on election day.

Addressing the crowd, Ighodalo expressed gratitude for the large turnout, noting that Akoko-Edo is the oldest local government area in the state.

He pledged to revitalise tourism and agriculture, including cashew production. He urged the people to choose light by voting for the PDP, promising that their votes would count and that election day would be peaceful, as President Bola Tinubu has guaranteed a free, fair, and credible election in Edo State.

Other notable party members in attendance included the state chairman of the PDP, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, the Deputy Director of Media at the Asue Ogie Campaign Council, Rev. Olu Martins, among many others.
