EFCC arrests 48 Kwara varsity students for Internet fraud

Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested 48 students of the Kwara State University and two others for offences bordering on internet fraud.

EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, the suspects were arrested on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at their various hideouts, after days of surveillance, adding that they will be arraigned in court when investigations are concluded.

Items recovered from the suspects, according to the statement, included laptops and different brands of phones.

The statement read, “Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested 48 students of the Kwara State University, KWASU, and two others for offences bordering on internet fraud.

“They were arrested on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 in their various hideouts after days of surveillance and fruitful intelligence on their suspected involvement in internet-related offences.

“Items recovered from the suspects include nine exotic cars, 24 laptops, and different brands of phones. The suspects will soon be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigations.”

A week ago, the anti-graft agency also arrested 14 individuals suspected of internet fraud at a “Yahoo Academy” in Makurdi.

In a statement on its official X handle, the EFCC said, acting on intelligence, operatives from the Makurdi Zonal Command raided a three-bedroom apartment along Achusa Road, Benue State, believed to be a training centre for internet fraud trainees.
