However the extent of the 31-year-old's injury has since been revealed.

A statement from the Egyptian FA said: "Mohamed Salah suffers a strain in his back muscle and will miss two matches in the African Nations.

"The x-rays that Mohamed Salah, the captain of the Egyptian national team, underwent, showed that he suffered a strain in the posterior muscle, and he will miss the team’s next two matches in the African Nations against Cape Verde, and then the round of 16 match in the event of qualification."

Egypt are due to face Cape Verde on Monday in their final group game, while a prospective round of 16 tie is scheduled to take place on January 27, suggesting that his injury problem may not see him ruled out for too long.

"He felt it and we all know how rarely Mo needs to go off so there was definitely something. I don’t have any more information right now.”

Asked if Liverpool would send medical staff to the tournament to provide assistance, Klopp added: “We will see. It depends on what the diagnosis is.

“They do will an ultrasound and an MRI and then we will know what it is and what Egypt plans. It’s too early.”
